Dr J.O Lawson had her first degree (M.B.BCh) from the University of Jos in 1985. She had her residency training in Paediatrics mainly at the Jos University Teaching Hospital and partly at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital and obtained the Fellowship of the West African College of Paediatrics in April 1994. She spent one year at the University Of New Mexico School Of Medicine, Albuquerque, United States as an exchange visitor in Clinical nutrition from 1994 to 1995. She also has a Masters degree in Public Health from the University of London(2008).
She worked as a lecturer/consultant Paediatrician at the University of Jos/ Jos University Teaching Hospital, Nigeria from 1995 to 1997 before relocating to work as Consultant Paediatrician at Zankli Medical Centre, Abuja in 1997.
She is a Member of the Paediatrics Association of Nigeria, Nigeria Medical Association, Nigeria Society of Neonatal Medicine, American Academy of Paediatrics, Fellow of the West African College of Physicians, member of the American Academy of Paediatrics and a Past National Secretary, Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria 2009-2011. Apart from regular clinical practice, she has been involved in research work mainly in Rickets and Sickle cell disease in the community and has 19 published papers in peer-review journals.
